St. Augustine - St. Johns County Airport (Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St. Augustine) Permitting of Safety Improvement Projects
Birkitt Environmental Services, Inc. (Birkitt) is permitting three safety
improvement projects at the St. Augustine – St. Johns County Airport.
These safety improvement projects involve repairing the Runway Safety
Area (RSA), installation of an Approach Lighting System for Runway 13/31,
and replacement of Taxiway C. As part of these improvements, Birkitt is
also working to permit the relocation of a tidal canal and restoration
of an on-site spoil island. The spoil island restoration will be utilized
as mitigation for the proposed projects. Birkitt is also coordinating
with FDEP and SJRWMD on the Sovereign Submerged Lands Determination and
obtaining a Class II Waters variance. The projects also involve extensive
agency coordination and permitting negotiations with the SJRWMD, the US
Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), FAA, as well as various resource commenting
agencies. Birkitt is responsible for Section 7 Consultation with USFWS
and NMFS regarding federally listed species and Essential Fish Habitat.
