Key West International Airport Marathon International Airport

Birkitt Environmental Services, Inc. (Birkitt) provided environmental services to Ricondo and Associates, Jacobs Engineering and Monroe County Airport Authority for the Key West International Airport (EYW) and Marathon International Airport (MTH).  Birkitt prepared Biological Assessment (BA) and natural resources sections  for the Environmental Assessments (EA’s) for these projects and coordinated with federal agencies including FAA, NMFS, and USFWS as well as State agencies to obtain the FONSI’s for both MTH and EYW.

Birkitt provided environmental support for permitting these projects through South Florida Water Management District  (SFWMD) and led the permitting efforts with the USACE. USACE authorization for the MTH  Relocate Runway 7-25 Phase 1 – Tree Clearing and Mitigation project and the SFWMD permit for this project have been issued.  Wetland restoration and planting plans were provided and approved. Tropical Hardwood Hammock impacts are being mitigated through Monroe County. Project construction is anticipated to start summer 2023.

EYW projects include: Aircraft Overflow Parking,  Commercial Apron Expansion, Taxiway A Extension,  and Security Fence.  Birkitt provided environmental support for SFWMD permitting and permits for two of the projects have been received; a third project permit is pending.  Birkitt is leading the coordination with the USACE, NMFS, EPA, USFWS and FAA to obtain USACE permits. Federal permits are expected soon for three of these projects.  Birkitt designed permittee responsible off-site mitigation to meet state and federal requirements for each projects.   Impacts to protected plant species are being mitigated through Monroe County.

Birkitt will be providing oversight for environmental compliance for project construction and restoration or implementation of permittee responsible mitigation; anticipated for late summer 2023.
